My favorite kind of business story is one where women create the product or service they want for themselves but it doesn’t exist.
Enter Kathryn Minshew and Alex Cavoulacos, co-founders of TheMuse.com, who decided to turn the traditional job search site into something much more personal, relevant, and effective. And they’ve done it so well that their site has been used by over 50 million jobseekers just in its first few years of existence. (And they’ve raised nearly $30 million in funding.)
The Muse offers a behind-the-scenes look at job openings, personalized career advice from prominent experts, and profiles hundreds of companies. It also helps companies create and market a strong employment brand to recruit the best talent out there.
Kathryn and Alex also have a new book out called The New Rules of Work: The Modern Playbook for Navigating Your Career.
On this week’s episode of Glambition Radio, Kathryn and Alex share the professional and personal choices that helped them find their power and land them on the “Forbes 30 Under 30 in Media” and SmartCEO’s Future50 lists.
Kathryn and Alex met when they were working together as management consultants in New York City. One afternoon over a glass of wine they compared notes about their career paths, what they learned, and the people who influenced their choices.
They realized there was no single place you could go to navigate your career – which was unbelievable, since choosing the right career path, is one of the most important decisions in a person’s life. And on top of that, all the job search websites, well, suck. You could type in detailed skillsets and the exact type of position you want, and you would still be delivered ridiculous matches. (You’ll love their story on this one!)
So they created their own destination platform to provide career advice, resources, and experts to help people acquire the skills and the confidence they need to be successful.
Between Kathryn and Alex’s real world experience and feedback from The Muse users, it then became clear that the old ways of approaching a career don’t work today and a new “rulebook” was needed. New technologies, video chats, remote work, and even the way we write resumes and do job interviews, have fundamentally changed – so they wrote The New Rules of Work, which we discuss on the show.
